DEC
DEC

This time of year hikers from all over visit the Hudson Valley to get a look at some of the fantastic fall views. Minnewaska State Park in Ulster County is a popular destination for many.

According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, a day of hiking turned into a scary situation for one hiker. It’s being reported that on Saturday October 5th a 30 year old woman had “fell 60 feet into a crevasse next to the cliff face of Gertrude’s Nose trail in Minnewaska State Park.”

The woman was said to be alert and conscious and suffering from back and ankle injuries when Forest Rangers Mark Brand and Howard Kreft responded to the scene. Air support was then called in and Forest Ranger Kevin Slade “responded to the New York State Police (NYSP) Aviation hanger in Newburgh for transport by helicopter to the incident location.”

Soon after pilots NYSP Tech. Sgts. Jim Leeder and John Bernardini took a  helicopter to the injured woman. When they arrived to the location Ranger Slade “operated the hoist.”

Watch below as pilots Leeder and Bernardi navigate the helicopter near the cliffs to save the fallen hiker:

After successfully removing the woman from the cliffs, she was taken by Kerhonkson Accord Ambulance and to a local hospital for treatment.
